Dubbo Accommodation When Visiting Royal Flying Doctor Service

Royal Flying Doctor Service

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is a 24/7 aeromedical service, providing residents and visitors to Australia’s remote outback with a ‘mantle of safety’. The service provides emergency retrieval and patient transfers, along with primary, dental, and mental health services that include general practice, specialised women’s, children’s and family health care, specialist clinics with medical consultants, and drug and alcohol counselling services.

The RFDS, originally known as the Australian Aerial Medical Service, was established by the Reverend John Flynn in 1928, with just one doctor and one pilot, operating a single aircraft out of Cloncurry in Queensland. Since that time, the Service has grown considerably, with bases now scattered all around Australia to provide world-class essential medical services and emergency medical care to people in remote areas.

Royal Flying Doctor Service – Dubbo base

The Royal Flying Doctor Service’s Dubbo base was established in 1999, providing a range of health services including emergency retrievals, inter-hospital transfers, blood storage and essential dental services, servicing the communities of Goodooga, Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri and Bourke. The Dubbo base also coordinates flights for the Rural Aerial Health Service.

Recent redevelopment of the Dubbo base’s multifunction aeromedical training centre has allowed the RFDS to develop its expertise and expand its services, with the centre acting as the hub for administration, patient flow and telehealth units. The training centre also houses a flight training centre for a recently acquired, specialised aircraft.

Royal Flying Doctor Service – Dubbo Visitor Experience

Located at 21 Judy Jakins Drive, Dubbo, the recently redeveloped RFDS base at Dubbo also includes a visitor centre that offers an amazing interactive educational experience with state-of-the-art technology. Visitors can explore an actual emergency aircraft, learn more about the RFDS’s work and operations through interactive, advanced ‘augmented reality’ technology and immersive stories.

The centre offers visitors the opportunity to view the RFDS base and airfield from the Observation Tower, support the RFDS’s mission by purchasing merchandise from their retail store, and enjoy a coffee, snack or meal at the Outback Trek Café. We recommend checking the RFDS website for current information on opening hours.
