Old Dubbo Gaol was first used as a courthouse lock up for the Dubbo area. It opened as the official gaol for Dubbo in 1859 and finally shut its doors in 1966. During that period it housed some of Dubbo’s most infamous criminals, such as Jackie Underwood who was incarcerated for his part in a local massacre.
Through wandering around Old Dubbo Gaol, learning about prison life and spending a few solitary moments in a cell, visitors can get a realistic insight into what it was like to have been confined in prison in the 19th century.
The entrance to the Old Dubbo Gaol is located just 1.4 km from The Palms Motel Dubbo in Eddie Meek Place just off Macquarie Street – just near the old clock tower. Free unlimited parking is available in the nearby Dubbo Visitor Information Centre car park.
Self-guided tours are available between 9am and 6pm on weekdays and between 9am and 4pm on weekends, with special theatrical tours running on weekends and during NSW School Holidays. Alternatively, book in for a guided family-friendly Twilight Tour or adults only Beyond the Grave Tour.
