If you have a love of Australian history and historical buildings, then Dundullimal Homestead is a must-see for anyone visiting the Dubbo region.
Currently under the careful curatorship of the National Trust of NSW, Dundullimal Homestead is believed to be Australia’s oldest surviving sophisticated slab house and the oldest surviving building in Dubbo that is open to the public.
The homestead was built in the early 1840s, along with a timber church, shed and sandstone stables, to serve as the head station of a 6,500-hectare squatting run – that is, a portion of open land (usually crown grazing land), beyond the limits of settlement, that was claimed by a ‘squatter’. Squatters were graziers who essentially took hold of the land illegally, using it as grazing land for their sheep.
The house itself is finely crafted, though not a grand home, however it is considered to be rather sophisticated for the period and location in which it was built. The more traditional stables complex contains the essential buildings that would have been required by a remote working property in the mid-19th century, including a sunken cool room and stores room, coach room and blacksmith’s forge.
Dundullimal Homestead is located at 23L Obley Road, Dubbo (1.5km past Taronga Western Plains Zoo) – a short 6.6km, 9 minute drive from The Palms Motel Dubbo.
The homestead is open Tuesdays to Fridays, 11am – 3pm (with last admittance at 2pm). To maintain safer social distancing, visitors are asked to pre-purchase tickets for a timed entry. Dundullimal offers informative group tours, as well as running education tours for school groups.
Due to COVID restrictions, the café that previously operated out of the homestead’s machinery shed is currently closed, but the gift shop remains open and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the grounds.
