Terramungamine Reserve is located on the banks of the Macquarie River, near Dubbo, NSW. The reserve plays an important part in preserving the area’s biodiversity by protecting the region’s diverse wildlife and its habitat, while enabling free public access to the river and surrounding environment.
The Dubbo region is home to a number of rare and endangered ecosystems, with a variety of protected species of native flora and fauna inhabiting the region’s extensive reserve system. Many of these beautiful and unusual species of plants, birds and animals can be found in and around Terramungamine Reserve, making it an incredibly important and special reserve.
Adding to the importance of the reserve is its historical significance to the traditional owners and custodians of the land within the Dubbo region – the Tubbagah People of the Wiradjuri Nation. Within Terramungamine Reserve lies a 100m stretch of ancient rock, upon which are over 150 grinding grooves which were made by the Tubbagah People who used these particular rocks to sharpen their spears and shape their tools over thousands of years.
Facilities at Terramungamine Reserve
Located approximately 13km north of Dubbo’s town centre, just off Burraway Road, Terramungamine Reserve caters for a number of fun and family-friendly outdoor activities. Enjoy a family BBQ on one of the site’s wood-fuelled barbeques, or a romantic picnic sitting on the bank of the Macquarie River; enjoy a spot of fishing or get the family out on the river for some kayaking or canoeing.
The river is bordered by a gravelly “beach” but, while canoeing or kayaking is possible, there is no boat ramp and entrance to the river is quite shallow at times. A sealed road leads to the entrance of the gate, providing good vehicle access to the reserve, and there is plenty of room for parking within the reserve and ample turning room for larger vehicles and caravans.
A lovely viewing platform overlooks the river and the Grinding Grooves, offering visitors a picturesque view of the river and the reserve, all at once. A set of concrete steps connects the top of the riverbank to the river, making for an easy journey up and down the bank.
On-site facilities include toilets, picnic tables and bench seats, in addition to the barbeques, however there is no access to potable (drinking) water, so make sure to take your own supply of water with you.
